Oakmont holds baseball clinic Feb. 5

'Try It Out' session with Granite Bay Youth Lacrosse

Oakmont High School will hold a baseball skills clinic for boys and girls ages 6-13 from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at the varsity field.

The cost is $30 (pre-registration is $27 if postmarked by today), and proceeds will benefit the Oakmont baseball program. The fee includes a camp shirt. Oakmont players and coaches will handle the instruction.

Campers should bring a glove.

Free lacrosse clinic for girls
Granite Bay Youth Lacrosse will hold a “Try It Out” session for girls in fifth through eighth grades from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday at Granite Bay High School. Beginners are welcome, and equipment will be provided.

Lacrosse club to start JV team
Granite Bay Youth Lacrosse is starting a junior varsity high school club boys team. No experience is necessary, and Roseville and Rocklin high school boys are encouraged to sign up. Visit for more information.

McAnally driver second in Showdown
D.J. Kennington, driving one of five Bill McAnally Racing entries in the NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown, qualified 15th and finished second to Jason Bowles of Ontario in the 225-lap race in Irwindale. Kennington is the reigning NASCAR Canadian Tire Series champion.

Also driving for McAnally Racing, Moses Smith finished ninth, NASCAR Mexico Series champ German Quiroga was 12th, former All American Speedway winner Paulie Harraka placed 16th, and three-time and reigning NASCAR K&N Pro Series West champion Eric Holmes had his race end when he was collected in a crash on lap 27. Holmes was 35th. Harraka led from laps 192-205.

Greg Rayl of Roseville had an engine problem and lasted only 18 laps, finishing 36th.

Also on the program, 2010 All American Speedway Late Model champion Matt Scott of Pine Grove finished eighth in a Whelen All-American Series race. Scott started 16th. John Moore of Granite Bay finished 17th in the 25-car field. Sean Woodside led all 51 laps and took the checkered flag.

Eric Schmidt of Roseville finished 10th in a 75-lap Super Late Model race, won by Ryan Partridge.
