Oakmont grad stocks up on soccer honors at Pepperdine

Karissa Garcia, a 2008 graduate of Oakmont High School, earned several awards in her senior soccer season at Pepperdine University.

Garcia was named to the All-West Coast Conference and All-District 8 academic first teams with a 3.95 grade-point average. The business administration major also is a candidate for the academic All-America team and has earned the WCC Commissioner’s Honor Roll gold status three times.

A defensive midfielder, Garcia started all 21 games for Pepperdine (15-2-4) this season and was named All-WCC honorable mention. She had three goals and three assists for the Waves, who lost to Long Beach State 1-0 in overtime in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Nov. 12 in Malibu.

At Oakmont, Garcia had 55 goals and 34 assists over a four-year career that saw the Vikings go a combined 58-16-8 with Pioneer Valley League titles in 2004 and ’05 and the Sac-Joaquin Section Division III championship in 2004. She was the Sierra Foothill League MVP in 2006 and ’07.

Loder wins wrestling tournament

Granite Bay High School graduate Ryan Loder began his sophomore wrestling season at the University of Northern Iowa by winning the 184-pound division at the Harold Nichols Open on Sunday in Ames, Iowa.

Loder capped a 4-0 day with a 4-1 decision over Derek Skala of St. Cloud State, according to Loder advanced to the final with a 17-0 major decision and two pins.

Loder began the 2010 season as an unranked redshirt freshman and went on to win the NCAA Western Regional. He climbed to No. 5 in one national poll and went into the NCAA Championships as the No. 6 seed. Loder was 30-11 last season and was named Freshman of the Year by the Western Wrestling Conference and
