Oakmont edges Bella Vista for sudden victory in water polo

Drew Wixon scored three minutes into extended overtime to give Oakmont High School an 8-7 Capital Valley Conference water polo victory over visiting Bella Vista on Tuesday.
Jared Codina broke loose at the deep wing and fed the ball to Wixon, who was posting up in the middle of the goal about 3 meters from the cage. Wixon quickly shot as two defenders grabbed him.
Bella Vista led 4-3 at halftime, the Vikings led 6-5 after three quarters, and the teams ended regulation tied 6-6. Taylor Nordell scored for Oakmont in the first overtime, and Bella Vista’s Alex Peterson tied the score at 7 with 1:50 remaining.
Wixon scored a match-high six goals, including three outside shots in the second period. Wixon also posted up for two goals in the third quarter, and he had an assist. Taylor Nordell had two goals and an assist for Oakmont (10-4, 3-1 CVC), and Jared Codina had an assist.
“It was a great team defensive effort, but Drew Wixon stepped up big time offensively for us, scoring both from the outside and inside post-up positions,” Oakmont coach Mark Plank said.
Granite Bay 16, Roseville 5 – The Grizzlies took a 9-1 lead in the first quarter and finished the visiting Tigers (7-10, 1-3 SFL) with a 5-0 final period. Tyler Roach had two goals and two steals for Roseville. Keaton Landenberger scored two goals and Brandon Faddis one for the Tigers, and goalie Andrew Sapp had three steals.

Oakmont 4, Bella Vista 3
– Kristin Knotts scored three goals to lift the host Vikings (11-7, 2-2 CVC) over the Broncos. Miranda Green scored the other Oakmont goal. Sarah Quitugua had four steals and an assist, and Natalie Barentson had nine blocks and an assist.

College men’s soccer
William Jessup 2, Pacific Union 0
– The Warriors (2-4, 1-0 CalPac) scored two goals three minutes apart late in the first half, and goalkeeper Jeff Dunn made six saves for the shutout in a California Pacific Conference opener in Angwin. Junior Jay Weislogel scored on a penalty kick in the 41st minute, and sophomore Ryan Braun scored on an assist from Mark Bondurak in the 44th minute.

High school soccer
Christian Brothers 3, Oakmont 1
– Brett Alexander scored on a breakaway to give the host Vikings (2-5-1) a tie at halftime, but the Falcons scored twice in the second half on a breakaway and a crossed ball and finish.

High school tennis
Oakmont 8, Del Campo 1
– The Vikings rode more consistent play in singles and doubles to a CVC victory at Del Campo. Oakmont is 2-1 in the CVC.
