The much-anticipated 130-pound battle at the Sierra Foothill League wrestling championships Thursday did not disappoint.

The division includes some of the most decorated wrestlers in the section, with Del Oro’s Austin Branum and Roseville’s Dylan Jankovich among its most recognizable names. When it was time to hit the mat for the league’s 130-pound title at Nevada Union, it was Oakmont’s Jake Elliott that was the last man standing.

In a match that went to overtime, the Viking sophomore took down Jankovich to earn the league crown.

“I felt that both students wrestled outstanding, and once again, it could have gone either way,” said Oakmont coach Dave Wells.

Woodcreek’s Austin Mason took the third place spot at 130 pounds after Branum defaulted.

The Timberwolves were very good at the lighter weight classes, with Sean Merigold (103 pounds) and Peter Santos (125) claiming league titles. Angelo Ciaraglia took second at 135 pounds, Jesse Screeton (140) captured third and Woodcreek got a fourth place finish in the heavyweight division from Kenny Herrera.

The top four in each weight class advance to the Division II Section Qualifier next Friday and Saturday at Oak Ridge High in El Dorado Hills.

Granite Bay had a strong day as well as 10 of its wrestlers moved on. Gavin Andrews (heavyweight) and Charlie Gordon (160) earned league championships, and 189-pounder William Anderson captured the 189-pound weight class that had belonged to former Grizzly star Ryan Loder last season.

“We felt our wrestlers had a very successful day,” said Granite Bay coach Mike Lynch. “Both of our seniors advanced and Charlie Gordon is an SFL Champion for the second consecutive year. This is outstanding.”

Other Granite Bay grapplers moving on include Shane Saylor (second at 103), Andrew Broadland (second at 112), Daniel Flinders (third at 119), Ian Mook (third at 125), Johnny Cooley (third at 135), Adam Wagner (second at 145) and Carson Schmidley (third at 152).

“Many of our young wrestlers are advancing, for which we are really excited,” Lynch said. “We have six sophomores and one freshman advancing, and one freshman (215-pound wrestler Kevin Blank) going as an alternate.”

Three other Oakmont athletes will join Elliott in El Dorado Hills next weekend. Russell LeBard took third place by defeating Joey Ramos of Rocklin 15-2. At 112, Yianni Athens finished 4th, losing by one point by way of a takedown at the final buzzer.

The Vikings got a surprise at 171 pounds as unranked Andrew Bradley finished fourth. Bradley reached the top four by pinning the second-ranked wrestler in his weight class.

“At the end of the day, the team was very upbeat and proud of their hard work and accomplishments,” Wells said. “We really seemed to gel together at the tournament, both varsity and JV.”

Including Jankovich, Roseville will send six young men on to the section level after Ryan Fratto won the league title in the 171-pound division. Logan Palmer (160) and Joe Carmona (189) finished third, and Derek Hoag (119) and Tyler Ash (152) wrestled to fourth-place results.

“We are looking forward to the upcoming (section) tournament and we really want to see our kids progress beyond this week as well,” Lynch said. “The key is staying focused and working hard on the things that got us this far, while striving to improve on all of our shortcomings. It is going to be a fun week of work.”

The top four finishers at the league finals earned a spot at the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II wrestling championships. The fifth-place wrestler is an alternate to the section meet.
