RIO LINDA — Blowout victories have become the norm for Woodcreek Little League’s 9/10-year-old all-stars.

After plowing through the District 54 tournament, Woodcreek mercy ruled Rancho Cordova 15-0 in four innings in its Section 4 Tournament opener Saturday at Babe Best Park.

Daniel Susac jacked two home runs to go with a triple. Zachery Watari was 2 for 4 with two runs and an RBI. Carson Blatnick reached base in all three plate appearances with a walk, single and double.

“Looking to get a solid hit to the oppo side,” Susac said regarding his approach at the plate. “That way, even if I’m late it’s still fair, and even if I’m early it’s still fair.”

The big numbers weren’t the only factor. Aiden Martinez scored twice from third on a wild pitch. The defense didn’t commit an error, converting seven ground balls and three fly balls into outs. Woodcreek pitching allowed one hit and one walk.

“They take care of the little things,” Woodcreek coach Mike Watari said. “They’re making the fundamental plays, which is key at this age level. When you make mental mistakes, that just leads to longer innings. These guys, they don’t make a lot of mental mistakes.”

Woodcreek’s next step will be doing well against improved competition. Coach Watari mentioned the importance of pitching management down the road.

“Some of our guys are going to have to step up and pitch,” Watari said. “We’ve had guys pitching, but they’ve only gone one or two innings. No one’s gone more than three innings on this team yet.”

Woodcreek plays at 5:45 p.m. Monday in the winners’ bracket final.
