Authorities are trying to determine the cause of death for an elderly man who was found dead in his car Wednesday after his 2006 Honda Pilot plowed into a tree in Granite Bay. The California Highway Patrol responded to the crash on Auburn-Folsom Road north of Eureka Road at around 11:25 a.m., CHP Officer Kelly Baraga said. The man, who was not carrying identification, collided with 100 feet of fencing before slamming into the tree. He was taken to Sutter Roseville Medical Center with massive chest trauma and was pronounced dead shortly after, she said. Baraga said it was possible the man lost control of the car while experiencing a medical emergency. It's unclear if the man died as a result of the crash or a medical incident. The man, who was the sole occupant, was wearing a seatbelt and both front and side airbags deployed. Officials do not believe alcohol played a factor. The Auburn Area CHP is seeking witnesses that may have observed the collision, or may have seen the driver prior to the collision. Anyone with information is encouraged to call the Auburn Area CHP Office at 663-3344.
