Making homes beautiful, one table at a time

With the recent trend of many people eating at home instead of going out, Granite Bay resident Jamie Mulkey and Terri Clark-Dougan of Roseville decided to start a new business.
“A Table to Remember” provides table setting services, coordinated table embellishments, and do-it-yourself table decorating no matter what the style or need.
“We want to beautify homes, one table at a time,” Mulkey said. “We can provide custom table scenes for a formal dinner party or something for everyday.”
Dougan said when people usually enter a home, the dining room is usually the first thing guests see.
“Yet usually this room is the least used room in the house,” Dougan said. “But we think it’s nice to have the table dressed. Plus with more people choosing to stay at home and entertain as opposed to going out, I think people are using their dining rooms more often and want it to look nice.”
Although the actual business was formed about three months ago, Dougan said she has been in the home staging arena for the past 10 years, working with Realtors to place furniture, accessories and wall hangings in just the right place to attract potential buyers.
“I actually think I was staging houses when I was a young girl and I would be babysitting,” Dougan said. “I would love to rearrange things.”
Mulkey’s background is in business and marketing and said she was interested in forming a partnership with Dougan to decorate tables because of “the opportunity to do something physically and mentally creative.”
“I also can bring in the social networking aspect of the business with Facebook and I’m working on a Web site,” Mulkey said.
The goal of A Table to Remember is not to encourage clients to get rid of all their china, stemware or flatware, but rather to work with what exists in a home and to add to it.
“We want to teach people to be able to use what they have,” Mulkey said.
But A Table to Remember doesn’t just concentrate on embellishing the formal dining room table. Dougan said they can offer unique arrangements for buffet tables as well as everyday looks for the kitchen table.
“We can even do table settings for themed birthday parties,” Dougan said.
Roseville resident Karen Bocast is familiar with Dougan and Mulkey’s work.
“I’ve attended numerous events where Terri and Jamie have provided the table decoration,” Bocast said. “Terri Dougan is an energetic bundle of talent. Her flare for decor and her endless creativity, generate unique designs that delight the senses. A Table to Remember’s creations are simply eye candy. With their combined talents, Terri and Jamie will be very successful.”
As for current dining trends the decorating duo said “anything goes,” and that could mean mixing your grandmother’s china with current place settings for an eclectic look.
To achieve a one-of-a-kind look Mulkey and Dougan suggest giving a table different elevations and placing mirrors in strategic locations to add interest.
“A table can look great without having everything match,” Dougan said.
While purchasing all the embellishments for just the right look can be expensive, Dougan suggests buying items at the end of the season to use the following year.
“When you find a good deal, buy it,” Dougan said.
