The Maidu Little League Junior All-Stars advanced to the second-round of the loser’s bracket, eliminating Folsom American on Thursday night, 16-7. Maidu jumped out to a 5-0 lead and looked like world beaters after an inning and a half, but Folsom came roaring back in the bottom of the second to tie the game. Dalton deVries singled in a run in the first inning and then hit a three-run double in the second to make the score 5-0. In the bottom of the inning, Folsom scored five runs with two outs, courtesy of a RBI single by Ryan Kuzinich, followed by a two-run single by Daniel Hodge. One batter later, Jon Brausch’s bloop single scored a pair of runs to tie the score. Folsom briefly took a 7-5 lead in the third inning when Thomas Gust, Kuzinich and Hodge walked to load the bases and two more walks to Hickman and Brausch scored Gust and Kuzinich to put Folsom up 7-5. Maidu then brought Logan Coggeshall into the game to pitch and Folsom didn’t score another run the rest of the game. deVries had another RBI single in the fourth inning and Jim Lunardelli followed with a 2-run home run to straightaway center field that put Maidu up for good, 8-7. deVries was 5-for-5 to lead the Maidu offense, which also got solid production and two hits from Michael Schmitt. Maidu added another run in the sixth with a RBI ground out by Lunardelli and then tacked on seven more runs in the seventh on six hits to put the game out of reach. "It was a bumpy game," said Maidu manager Sean Harrigan, "but one that we will take after the tough loss (against Woodcreek) last night." Maidu’s next game is at 4 p.m. Saturday against the El Dorado Hills South/Lakeside winner, while Folsom American’s run for a District 54 title has ended.
