EL DORADO HILLS — District 54 all-star baseball tournaments are nearing the finish of pool play, and the 9- and 10-year-old teams from Woodcreek and Maidu are trying to lock down berths in the championship round next week.

Woodcreek moved to 2-0 in the four-game pool-play session with a 13-1 over Folsom National on Thursday and plays Ponderosa (1-1) at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 2, at Jeff Mitchell Field. Maidu is 3-0 and plays Woodcreek at 9 a.m. Sunday. The game originally was scheduled for Tuesday, but after being rained out and rescheduled, now would decide the first and second seeds from Pool A if Woodcreek defeats Ponderosa on Saturday. Lakeside and Roseville West are in Pool B.

Woodcreek scored four runs in the top of the first inning and never let up against Folsom National.

Leading 5-1 in the third, Woodcreek’s Brock Thawley led off with a single, reached second on a passed ball and scored on Justin Gangwich’s double. Gangwich scored on groundout by Ryan Harvey to make it 7-1.

Woodcreek tacked on six more runs in the fourth. Kyle Kern and Kaden Siska roped back-to-back singles and scored on Greg Rotteveel’s triple. Rotteveel scored on a single by John Martini.

Aiden Martinez walked and scored behind Martini on a single by Daniel Susac for a 12-1 lead. Carter Krupp singled and scored Woodcreek’s final run on a base knock by Kern.

Krupp struck out two and forced a popup in the final inning.

Maidu opened with a 3-2 victory over Folsom National, pounded Ponderosa 14-2 and beat Folsom American 9-3 on Thursday.

Woodcreek originally planned to take a train to Oakland to see the A’s game on Sunday but with the rescheduled game had to cancel the team outing.

“Fortunately, we were able to reschedule it toward the end of July,” Woodcreek manager Mike Watari said. “We try to do it for team camaraderie, team building.”

That’s not the team’s only bonding experience. Every Woodcreek all-star, from the 9-10 team to the Senior squad, has bleached hair.
