Local St. Baldrick's events hosted by Keaton Raphael Memorial and five private celebrations recently raised more than $350,000 for childhood cancer research.

The 10th-annual celebration in the greater Sacramento area recruited 786 men, women and children to shave their heads to solicit donations for the St. Baldrick's Foundation.

More than 300 people went bald for the cause on March 10 at Westfield Galleria at Roseville. The top fundraising team was Team Bald and Beautiful, which raised $14,801. Team members included Roseville Councilman Tim Herman, Planning Commissioner Robert Dugan, representatives from WestPark Associates and others.

More than 160,000 children worldwide are diagnosed with cancer each year, and it remains the leading cause of death by disease among children in the United States. But only 4 percent of all federal cancer research funding goes to pediatric cancer.
