Local golfers win First Tee Junior overall titles

Clare Sorensen the overall girls championship and Brandon Baumgarten and Julian Woodfork were boys co-champs in The First Tee of Greater Sacramento Junior Tour Championship on Saturday at Timber Creek Golf Course.

Baumgarten, who attends Granite Bay High School, and Woodfork each shot 1-under-par 71. Sorensen, who lives in Roseville and plays at Christian Brothers, shot a 75.

Spencer Cvitanov and Austin Smotherman shared the boys 16-18 title, each carding a 72. Alex Gibbs of Granite Bay and Michael Grenz tied for third at 73.

Charlie Cameron won the boys 14-15 crown with a 76, one stroke better than John Burke, Connor Estrada and Chad Kubes. Zachary Kwan of Granite Bay was fifth with a 78.

Austin Long’s 75 won the boys 12-13 group by two strokes over Grant Leppek.
Sara Scarlett and Camille Wagg tied for the girls 15-18 championship, each with a 77. Roseville sophomore Virgie Velasquez finished fifth with an 82.

Brittany O’Bryant captured the girls 12-14 title with a 79.

High school volleyball

Roseville winless at tourney — Roseville lost to Union Mine, Oak Ridge and Oakmont in pool play and Folsom in the playoffs at the Chris Craft Tournament last weekend at Oak Ridge and Vista del Lago.

Coach Ron Grove said in an e-mail the Tigers learned things that will help when Sierra Foothill League play begins Sept. 29.

“It was a very strong tournament, and we played some excellent teams that will prepare us for the SFL,” Grove said.

Corinne Smith and libero Amanda Susbilla played well in the back row for Roseville. Lindsey Anderson was solid as a right-side hitter and middle blocker, and Kirsten Merlino continued to excel as an outside hitter.
