Local athletes win Biletnikoff Scholarships

Nicholas Petrarca of Roseville High School and Alec Naki of Granite Bay were among five winners of a $1,000 Biletnikoff Scholarship.

Petrarca, a club volleyball player, has a 4.1 grade-point average and plans to major in science in college. He has been accepted to Cal Poly, according to the website www.biletnikoff.org.

Naki, an All-Sierra Foothill League defensive back this season with Sac-Joaquin Section Division I-champion Granite Bay, carries a 4.0 GPA and plans to major in business finance.

Other scholarship winners were football and rugby player Logan Lamb of Del Oro, volleyball player Patrick Webb of Jesuit and basketball player/skier/swimmer Crystal Fisher of Dublin.

The Biletnikoff Foundation will award four $2,500 scholarships to high school senior student-athletes in 2012. For information, visit www.biletnikoff.org.

Oakmont to host baseball skills clinic

Oakmont High School will hold a baseball skills clinic for boys and girls ages 6-13 from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Jan. 14, at the varsity field rain or shine.

Coaches and players will provide the instruction. The pre-registration cost is $27 if postmarked by Jan. 10 and $30 at the gate. Players should bring a glove and will receive a camp shirt.

Knights of Columbus free throw contest

The Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship is scheduled from 1-3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 8, at St. Rose Church, 615 Vine Ave., in Roseville.

The contest is open to girls and boys ages 10-14. There will be 10 winners.

Woodcreek offers Little Lady Timberwolves basketball

Signups are being taken for Little Lady Timberwolves Basketball at Woodcreek High School.

The league is scheduled for four Saturdays: a clinic and evaluation from 9 to 11 a.m. Jan. 21, followed by practices and games on Jan. 28 and Feb. 4 and 11.
Girls in kindergarten and first grade will shoot at 6½-foot baskets. Second- and third-graders will play on eight-foot baskets and fourth- and fifth-graders on 10-foot baskets.

Girls will be introduced to the offensive and defensive fundamentals of basketball, as well as rules and sportsmanship. Woodcreek coaches and players will organize and conduct practices and games.

Pre-registration is $50 with the deadline Dec. 21. Late registration will be held at 8 a.m. Jan. 21 at the Woodcreek gymnasium, and the fee will be $60.

Bella Vista hosts lacrosse coaching clinic

A level 1 clinic will be held for U.S. Lacrosse members from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 15, at Bella Vista High School in Fair Oaks.

The clinic is part of the U.S. Lacrosse Coaching Education Program certification procedure. The early registration fee is $65 until Jan. 8 and $85 thereafter.
