Lincoln runners up in Lady Zebras Classic

Roseville claims top prize

Bouncing back from an earlier loss in the Lincoln Lady Zebra Classic soccer tournament the Fighting Zebras held their own against a powerful Roseville team before falling 2-0 in the championship match at the Edward Alexander Grey Sports Complex. Lincoln came off an earlier tournament loss to Rosemont and battled their way past Yuba City for earn a berth in the battle for the crown. Knowing the Tigers were a scoring machine the Zebras went on the defense and did a superb job of holding Roseville to just two goals. “Roseville’s a tough team. (One) of the girls on that team has a full ride to ASU. They’re club players that play year round,” said an obviously pleased Lincoln head coach Jason Treanor. “I think our girls played well. We went defensive minded. We weren’t trying to get shots (tonight) we were trying to defend shots.” Zebras goalkeeper Abbie Faingold saved 15 shots on goal defending against the Tigers. A sophomore, Faingold was facing a team that had already scored 17 goals in preseason. “They got past our defense and pretty much had a wide open shot at our goal,” Faingold said of the two scores Roseville got past her. “I can see the whole game so I try to direct (my teammates) the best I can. “We’re very excited for this season to start and we think that we can do pretty well in league,” Faingold added. Going on the offensive for Lincoln were Melanie Abeyta, Alexandria Kent, Alyssa Gallagher, and Celina Maldonado. Gallagher was able to take two shots on goal. Lincoln 1, Yuba City 0 _ The Zebras’ Riley Sims broke through for a goal in the closing seconds of the Zebras’ semifinal match to defeat the Honkers. The girls in blue had 12 shots on goal in that contest and the defense was especially strong. Faingold only had to make two saves in the game. Attempting shots against Yuba City were Natalie Franco (2), Alexandria Kent (3), Maldonado (2), Sims (2), Kyndra Props, Sandra Durham, and Gallagher. Rosemont 3, Lincoln _ The Fighting Zebras did everything they could to win but victory wasn’t in the cards. Lincoln took 18 shots on goal – Kent, Gallagher, and Maldonado had three each, Sims, Melissa Arthurs and Carly Deweese had two apiece, and Props and Jasmeen Bains each took one. However, none found the mark. Faingold had six saves in the match. Lincoln 5, Forest Lake Christian 0 _ The Zebras opened pool play two days early in order to accommodate the Falcons schedule and blanked the birds to move into the quarterfinals.
