Letter: Thanks for 'Tackle Hunger 2012' support

-A +A

From the bottom of my heart, I would like to thank the Oak Ridge and Ponderosa High School principals, staff, football players, cheerleaders, youth groups, and fans (as well as local media outlets), who recently made “Tackle Hunger 2012” a reality and a success.

At the rival game between Ponderosa and Oak Ridge football teams, our goal was to raise awareness of the causes and consequences of hunger in our community.

However, a second important outcome was the uniting of thousands of good folks in a common cause — ensuring the future of the Food Bank’s Emergency Food Assistance Network, which provides help to thousands in El Dorado County.

In a downturned economy, schools are struggling with funding cuts themselves, and education and student groups often must turn to fundraising just to get by.   But on this night, they chose to shine a spotlight on our neighbors in need.  I am so grateful for the outpouring of support.
The Food Bank of El Dorado County — the community’s  largest  local, collaborative charity — continues to make a difference. And we look forward to making “Tackle Hunger” an annual event.

In the coming weeks, watch for the Food Bank's Newsletter in your mailbox, and read about how hard we have been working for at-risk families.

We hope many more friends will want to become involved in this good cause.

Mike Sproull, Food Bank of El Dorado County
