A late Maidu rally fell just short in a Wednesday elimination game at the Little League District 54 10/11-year-old all-star tournament at Feist Park in Granite Bay. The host team from Lakeside survived to play another day with a 6-5 victory. Steven Ponzo held Maidu to two runs through four innings before leaving the bump, and he left with Lakeside leading 6-2, but the drama was just beginning. In the bottom of the fifth, Maidu jammed the bases with one out for Jordan Couch, who ripped a double that chased home a pair of runs. A third run scored on a throwing error to pull Maidu within a single tally with one inning to play. Maidu set down Lakeside in the sixth to get back on offense needing one to tie and two to win. Back-to-back hits by Peter Schofield and Brandon White put two runners on, but a strikeout ended the threat and left Lakeside extending its season, while the Maidu all-star run came to an end. Lakeside was back at Feist Park on Thursday night to seek revenge against Roseville West in another elimination game. To the winner of that contest goes the right to battle Woodcreek for the district title.
