A dog pile at mid court ended the night for Valley Christian Academy, which defeated visiting Sacramento Waldorf 42-36 in the first round of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division V playoffs Tuesday.

“We’ve been wanting to do it all year,” Lady Lions senior Carly Gish said. “We finally got the chance to do it.”

Valley Christian (23-4) lost to Sacramento Waldorf (17-10) 37-36 in its season opener Nov. 27.

It wasn’t all fun and games throughout, as the teams were tied 5-5 after the first quarter.

Gish got hot and scored 12 of the Lady Lions’ 15 points in the second quarter, and Valley Christian took a 20-15 lead over the Waves. She finished with 28 points.

“I was just trying to push it. Everyone was struggling,” she said.

Valley Christian maintained a lead until the Waves caught up late in the game. Savannah Telford completed a three-point play to pull Sacramento Waldorf within 37-34 with 1:55 remaining, but it wasn’t enough to overtake the Lady Lions.

Coach Kim Contreras was proud of Valley Christian’s victory, even though it struggled offensively. She said the team’s focus was on defense, and even though it put the Lady Lions in some foul trouble, it paid off.

“We know we could have done better,” senior Samantha Shoemake said.

The victory sends seventh-seeded Valley Christian into the quarterfinals against second-seeded Brookside Christian (23-5) at 7 p.m. Thursday in Stockton. Brookside beat 15th-seeded North Hills Christian 89-25 in the first round. The winner moves to the semifinals Tuesday at Galt High School.

“They’re a young team, and we’re hoping playoffs might throw them off,” Contreras said.
