The Granite Bay High junior varsity boys volleyball team won the gold division at the UC Davis Tournament last weekend. It was the Grizzlies' second tournament win in two weekends, putting them well on their way to setting new winning records in the 2010 season. The JV team once again finished pool play undefeated and was the number one seed in the gold division going into bracket play. Granite Bay defeated Pleasant Valley, 25-7, 25-11 and Bear River 25-13, 25-13. The finals were played late in the afternoon pitting Granite Bay against Nevada Union. Granite Bay prevailed to win the tournament, 25-19, 25-19. Granite Bay presented a tough mix of both defense and offense. Jake Neptune and Jarred Oliviera served numerous consecutive serves to gain the upper hand against all teams they saw. Kyle Cady sank several serves in the crucial moments of several games. Bryan Berry sparked the team's momentum with his tough middle hits and middle hitter, Michael Bertolino, connected with the ball, giving the opposing teams little opportunity to respond. The outside hitting team of Carson Odegard and Matt Austin pounded the volleyball all day. Jacob Ball's consistent right side hitting assisted the team to their top seed in brackets and Jordan Long, also hitting on the right, provided key kills during the final matches. Travis Vincenzini led the defensive back row with his quick responses picking up the opponents balls no matter the placement in the court. Travis sat out the bracket play with a minor injury and Alex Kimble stepped in to continue the defensive strength with his solid passing.
