Roseville has a state champion in team tennis. The Johnson Ranch Racquet Club Heat won the 28th annual Gar Glenney Cup for girls ages 13-15 last weekend in Newport Beach, beating a combined team from the Westview Attackers and San Marino Aces 5-4. Coach Jim Yoakum said the Heat was the only Northern California team out of six to beat its Southern California opponent. “It was amazing really. It was very cool,” Yoakum said. Johnson Ranch ended singles play with a 4-2 lead Saturday, and twins Chloe and Lily Forlini won at No. 1 doubles Sunday to clinch the title. Yoakum said the final score could have been 7-2, but two matches went to a tiebreak in the third set. “When you get to that point, it’s anybody’s game,” he said. “We had already won the championship by the time those matches reached their conclusion. I went on the court and said, ‘We got it. Just have fun.’ We were clearly better than they were.” The Forlini twins, undefeated this year, won their doubles match 6-4, 6-1, and the celebration was on. “As a doubles pair, they have just dominated people – not just beat them but thrashed them,” Yoakum said. “This team from Southern California got more wins than anyone else all season. After that first set, (the twins) pretty much just crushed them. (Opponents will) battle for a while, then they’ll just crack. You can see it in their posture. You can see it in their faces. It’s true. They have learned how to play doubles so well. They’re very aggressive. They will just take over and crush you the minute you ease up.” Chloe and Lily Forlini also swept singles matches Saturday, and Abby Bacharach and Bianca Luna recorded crucial victories in singles. Yoakum said Luna’s 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 4 made the difference in the match. “Bianca is such a fighter, she just sort of wore her down,” Yoakum said of Luna. “She’s what we call a retriever. She’ll just keep hitting the ball back until it drives the other kids crazy and they miss.” No. 6 singles player Mady Washburn received the tournament sportsmanship award, voted by opposing coaches. Also playing for the Heat were Shelby Kubota and Megan Sullivan.
