The Roseville Elks Lodge #2248 will hold the first step in the national Hoop Shoot free throw contest at 10 a.m. today at Kaseberg Elementary School, 1040 Main St., in Roseville.

The competition is open to boys and girls ages 8-13, and there is no cost to enter. A parent or guardian must attend with their child and provide proof of age. Trophies will be awarded to the top three boys and girls in each group, and winners will advance to district competition.

Little Lady Timberwolves basketball signups

Registrations are being taken for the Little Lady Timberwolves fundamental basketball league and skills clinic at Woodcreek High School. The league is for girls from kindergarten through fourth grade and introduces offensive and defensive fundamentals.

Women’s football team to hold tryouts

The Sacramento Sirens of the Independent Women’s Football League will hold tryouts today at Will Rogers Middle School, 4924 Dewey Dr., in Fair Oaks. Registration begins at 9 a.m. and tryouts at 10.

There is a $40 tryout fee, and current insurance and identification are required. Players must be 18 years of age by April 2011. Athletes should dress in exercise clothes and wear cleats.

The IWFL has 51 teams and more than 1,600 players throughout North America. Sirens home games last spring were played at Natomas High School in Sacramento. The Sirens have won three national championships and last season lost to the Boston Militia in the title game in Texas.
