Playoff basketball is here, so things are getting serious.

Valley Christian Academy was merciless against visiting Napa-Trinity Prep on Tuesday night, as the Lady Lions rolled to an 82-35 victory in the first round of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division VI playoffs.

Their fast-paced press attack was steered by sophomore Lily Hagerty, who scored a career-high 49 points.

“Honestly, when I came out here, I was a little bit nervous,” Hagerty said. “Once you get out here, it’s about having fun.”

Hagerty nearly completed a triple double with 11 steals and nine rebounds. Most of her points came on fast breaks, as she easily converted steals into layups. Hagerty nailed five three-pointers and went 8 for 8 from the free throw line.

“She was exceptional,” Valley Christian coach Kim Contreras said. “She did incredibly well. She’s still learning; she’s still building up. She’s becoming more confident.”

Overmatched Trinity Prep (17-6) suited up only five players, and while the Crusaders kept pace early, they were overmatched in the second and third quarters, when Valley Christian (15-9) went on a 50-17 run.

“Basically, we’re just playing the game that we’ve been playing all (throughout) league,” Contreras said. “We’ve learned to just run fast-paced the first two quarters to get up on them and then slow it down to a half-court game. Use the clock wisely and play disciplined.”

Trinity tried to slow the pace, but the Lady Lions forced the tempo with 33 steals. Patricia Williams and her deadly floater was Trinity’s best bet with 13 points and seven assists.

Valley Christian is two wins away from a section championship. The Lady Lions on Thursday will be host to the winner between No. 3 Marysville-New Life Christian and No. 6 Stockton Christian.

“We need to focus on our defense,” Contreras said. “I know that we can get our offense; we know how to create shots. So it’s definitely going to fall into our defense.”
