Grizzlies win Turlock tourney

GB’s Cooley, Andrews win titles at Rumble in the Jungle

An outstanding performance from start to finish carried the Granite Bay High wrestling team to a team title at the Rumble in the Jungle Saturday in Turlock. The Grizzlies won a total of 22 matches by pin on an impressive day, with heavyweight Gavin Andrews leading the way. Andrews pinned his first three opponents before knocking off Yosemite’s Dakota Smith in overtime in the division’s final. Johnny Cooley was the other Granite Bay wrestler to take the top spot on the medal stand, as he won to matches by pin and two by decision, including a title bout against Able Robles of San Leandro. Adam Wagner (147 pounds) and Carson Schmidley (154) took individual second-place spots, while Ian Mook (132) was third at 132 pounds. Shane Saylor (105) and William Anderson (191) captured fourth-place results and three Grizzlies – Andrew Broadland (114), Phil Vogeley (127) and Charlie Gordon (162) finished fifth.
