They played through the weather Monday at Lincoln’s Turkey Creek, and the Granite Bay High boys golf team was among the survivors.

The Grizzlies finished third at the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II tournament to earn the final team spot at next week’s section Master’s tournament in Stockton.

Granite Bay was paced by a 76 from Brandon Baumgarten, who tied for medalist honors at the event, but it was the team’s ability to weather the storm that helped the Grizzlies advance.

We were able to shoot 419 in horrible conditions,” said Granite Bay coach Terry Stafford. “Rain, hail (yes it hailed on us) and cold.”

That 419 was six strokes lower than fourth-place Ponderosa and gives this young Grizzly team the ability to move on to play at least one more week. SFL rival Del Oro shot a 406 to advance as the second place unit behind Christian Brothers (398).

Rocklin’s Nick Schafer also moved on as one of three additional individual golfers as he was one of the survivors of a four-golfer one-hole playoff after shooting a 77 for the day.

Granite Bay’s second-best number was the 78 fired by Alex Gibbs.

“With three freshman and three sophomores on our squad, I was very pleased that we were able to grind in out and make it past the Section tournament to play in the Masters tournament next Monday,” Stafford said.

Bobby Helzer, Chuck Pedone, Bryan Wise and Wesley Finkemeier are the other members of the Granite Bay squad.

It was not a good day for SFL runner-up Woodcreek, as the Timberwolves finished sixth (455).

My golfers seemed to let the conditions affect them more as their scores were much higher than normal,” said Woodcreek coach Brent Burkett. “Scores, in general were higher, but I would estimate that teams shot 10 to 15 strokes worse due to weather where my team shot 30 to 35 strokes worse due to weather.”

Granite Bay will play at the Master’s tournament next Monday in Stockton at The Reserve at Spanos Park.
