Granite Bay tied school history Wednesday night by winning in the first round of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I boys basketball playoffs.

Kennedy (16-10) gave the Grizzlies a run for their money, but the host squad pulled out a 68-52 victory over the 13th-seeded Cougars.

“The kids played great,” Granite Bay coach Jason Sitterud said. “It’s our first playoff game in a couple years. It was a little tight the first half. We were a little nervous. The kids did a great job. We found a way and hung around.”

Fourth-seeded Granite Bay (25-3) led 29-28 at halftime, and then Jacob Keys got hot. Keys scored 10 points in the third quarter on 4-of-5 shooting to help the Grizzlies extend their lead to 47-39.

“I was just trying to be aggressive,” Keys said. “We talked about it during halftime, and we got our intensity back and kept it going from there.”

Keys finished with 15 points, four assists, three rebounds and three steals.
He wasn’t the only one to have a monster game for the Grizzlies. Jon Davis had 17 points, nine rebounds and three blocked shots. Robert Duncan hit his groove with 23 points, three assists and three steals.

Duncan, who averaged 19 points during the regular season, scored 14 and 11 points in the previous two games.

Granite Bay will be host to McNair (22-5) of Stockton on Friday night in the quarterfinals. Fifth-seeded McNair defeated Oak Ridge 62-58 in the first round.
Quarterfinal winners will advance to the semifinals next week at ARCO Arena.
