Thursday was a great day for Granite Bay water polo in the pool at the Roseville Aquatic Center. After the Lady Grizzlies took care of business with a 9-4 win over Rocklin, the boys team knocked off Oakmont 20-10 as both teams won section semifinal matches in the Division II tourney. The Granite Bay boys used a balanced scoring effort led by Robert Thyberg’s five goals in taking care of Oakmont. After a tightly contested opening period ended with the Grizzlies up 5-3, Granite Bay went on a 8-2 run in the second to pull away. Defense on Oakmont’s talented scorer, Shane Welch, was the key for Granite Bay. The Viking senior closed his career with four goals, but three of them came in the final five minutes after the issue had been decided. The Grizzlies were impressive on the offensive end as well, as they moved the ball very well and generated a number of breakaway scoring chances, as they cruised to the comfortable win. James Vigeant had three goals and an impressive eight assists in the contest, while Eliot Adams and Brad Cooper also each scored three times. For Oakmont, Taylor Nordell, David Smith and Drew Wixon each scored a pair of goals. The much-anticipated rematch between Granite Bay and SFL rival Del Oro is up next in Saturday’s boys’ DII section final at the RAC. Del Oro won a defense battle with Rio Americano 6-4 in the final game Thursday night.
