It was a fitting start to an anticipated run to another section title game Tuesday night at Granite Bay. The Granite Bay High boys volleyball team made short work of the visitors from Monterey Trail in the second round of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II playoffs. The Grizzlies so thoroughly dominated the contest that they were able to get ample work for a number of recent call-ups from a successful junior varsity squad. The hits came from all directions for Granite Bay as it swept its way into the quarterfinal round with a 25-13, 25-15, 25-18 victory. As they have all year long, senior Mason Jaynes, Tyler Menard, Tyler Towery, Scotty Santor, Tom Patterson, Garrick Monaghan, Taylor Wetzel and David Bittner shared the spotlight in impressive fashion. Junior Kyle Howarth also had some moments of his own, as did nearly every Grizzly participant. Impressive service runs on the swings of Santor and Patterson made the difference in game one as the Grizzlies led by as many as 13 points on their way to a tone-setting win. Game two was much the same, with different players, as Jaynes, Mongahan and junior John Holway put together long strings of points on their serves. Monterey Trail had a few small moments, and actually made it interesting in game three, while Granite Bay was in the middle of a liberal substitution pattern, but when the Grizzlies needed the big points, they delivered. Down 11-12 midway through the third, Patterson fired off five service winners in a row, and then Menard matched that number as Granite Bay put the game, and the match away. With the tournament down to the final eight teams, four of which are from the Sierra Foothill League, things get more serious Thursday night as Granite Bay welcomes Jesuit in the quarterfinal matchup. That match gets underway at 7 p.m.
