Granite Bay, Woodcreek girls win cross country sub-section titles

Granite Bay High School’s girls cross country team didn’t quite pull off another 1-2-3 finish. The Grizzlies’ top three runners switched around the order and came in 1-2-4 this time, but it was enough to win the Division I varsity girls championship at the Sac-Joaquin Sub-Section Meet on Saturday at Frogtown in Angels Camp. Senior Brooke Holt has been first across the finish line this season, but she finished second by one second to freshman teammate Clare Carroll, who won the three-mile race in 18 minutes, 41 seconds. Senior Christine Zavesky was fourth in 19:20. A 12th-place finish by freshman Katie Mersereau in 20:03 and a 30th by junior Natalie Hassna in 20:37 gave the Grizzlies 49 points. Oak Ridge was second with 61. Sophomore Karina Nunes won the Division II varsity girls race in 19:07 and led Woodcreek to the team championship. Woodcreek junior Sami Gomez was seventh in 19:50, followed by McCall Habermehl in 16th (20:26), junior Ciara Donnelly in 18th (20:27) and senior Stephanie Romo in 26th (20:47). Woodcreek had 68 points to Del Oro’s 72. Oakmont freshman Marisa Carino finished third in 19:29 and led Oakmont to a sixth-place finish. Granite Bay sophomore Trent Brendel finished second in the Division I varsity boys. His time of 16:15 was a second slower than Davis senior Trevor Halsted. Brandon Biando’s 14th-place effort in 16:54 began a clump of Woodcreek finishers, and the Timberwolves finished second with 101 points. Del Campo was the runaway winner with 40. Woodcreek’s Hunter Tyler was 16th (16:56), Jon Horvath 19th (16:58), Taylor Guinnip 25th (17:04) and Angelo Ciaraglia 27th (17:04). Luis Mora of Oakmont was ninth individually in 16:39, and the Vikings finished 11th. Other results: · Woodcreek won the Divisions I and II junior varsity boys title with 53 points to Bella Vista’s 68. Austin Mason of Woodcreek finished second in 17:30, followed by Timberwolves teammates Justin Clark in fourth (17:40), Karl Schmidt in sixth (17:43), Marshall Sears in 11th (17:53) and Hernan Oviedo in 30th (18:42). · Woodcreek runners Rosemary Dipentino and Sydney Allen were seventh and ninth in 21:58 and 22:07 in the Divisions I and II JV girls race. · Granite Bay finished 11th in Division I sophomore boys. · Oakmont was 15th in Division II sophomore boys, and Logan Stahl of Roseville finished 12th in 12:07. · Oakmont’s Division II frosh-soph girls were third and Roseville fourth. Oakmont freshman Mikayla Brant was seventh in 14:32. · Granite Bay’s freshman boys finished second to Lincoln of Stockton in Division I. Will Greenwood was second individually in 11:48, and Andrew Moudakis was fifth in 12:09. · Roseville’s freshman boys finished fifth in Division II.
