Granite Bay High School began the sixth annual Bronco Roundup tournament at Bella Vista with an impressive 64-51 victory over Pleasant Grove on Thursday night.

“The first half was pretty scary,” said Granite Bay coach Jason Sitterud, whose team led 25-22. “Pleasant Grove played very well.”

A 12-0 run to start the second half gave Granite Bay the push it needed. The Grizzlies outscored the Eagles 21-8 in the quarter.

“Take some pride in what we’re doing, we worked really hard, we’ve got 10 seniors, this is it,” Sitterud said to his team at halftime.

An 8-0 run midway through the fourth quarter, capped by a Robert Duncan layup, sealed the deal. Duncan had 25 points and four steals, and Kyle Howarth posted his second double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds. Jon Davis scored 15 points for the Grizzlies.

Granite Bay plays Franklin on Friday night in a semifinal. The Wildcats beat Oakmont 65-55 in the opening game Thursday. The Grizzlies will either play in the championship game at 7 p.m. Saturday or the third-place game at 5:30 p.m.

Valley Christian 97, Point Arena 80 – The Lions topped the Pirates to register a first-round victory in the Redwood Classic for the first time. Valley Christian flirted with the century mark in Boonville, near Ukiah, but ran out the final 34 seconds.

The Lions led 19-17 after one quarter and built their lead from there. Junior Jason Gish scored 30 points for the Lions, and senior Joey Parker had 19. Jesse Peters, a 6-7 center, had nine points, 17 rebounds and five blocked shots. Jeremy Tyller and Aaron Perchaz scored 10 points each.

“This was definitely our style of game,” said coach Brad Gunter Jr., whose team was scheduled to play Friday and Saturday. “The up-paced tempo was evident from the start, and we wanted to keep that pace going for four quarters. We knew we were the only team that had a chance at 100 points, and that was the goal.”

Roseville JV girls tournament – Host Roseville defeated Antelope 55-40 and was the only city team to advance to the semifinals. Oakmont was edged by Placer 47-46, and Woodcreek lost to Colfax. Bella Vista beat Oak Ridge in the other first-round game.

Lauren Stafford scored 24 points to lead Roseville, and Marissa Dumford had 13 points and nine rebounds. Lindsay Anderson grabbed 14 rebounds for the Tigers.
