Granite Bay tops Roseville, clinches co-title, No. 1 seed in SFL
Granite Bay High School clinched a share of the Sierra Foothill League baseball championship and the league’s No. 1 seed for the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II playoffs with an 8-5 victory over visiting Roseville on Monday.
Blake Rivera roped a two-run double and Dalton Blaser a two-run knock up the middle in the top of the second for the Tigers (8-17 overall, 5-8 SFL), who led 4-2 until the Grizzlies (19-5, 11-2) broke through against Roseville ace Mark Reece in the sixth.
“We had a rough time offensively for a while,” Granite Bay coach Pat Esposito said.
Sophomore Vinny Esposito took one for the team for the second time in the game, Nick Lebeau singled up the middle, and Aaron Knapp doubled in a run. Ryan Rosa reached to load the bases, Brett Bautista hit a tying sacrifice fly to center, Devin Lehman singled to the right side, and Jordan Blake blasted a two-run triple to right to make it 8-4.
Granite Bay starter Brendan Keeney allowed five hits and seven walks in five innings, and he struck out eight.
“He stayed with it. He had some good innings,” Esposito said of the senior. “Mechanically, he was OK. He just toughed it out.”
Jake Peterson closed with a strikeout in the seventh with the bases loaded and Blaser on deck.
The Grizzlies and Tigers met again Tuesday with the regular-season finale scheduled for today at Granite Bay. Esposito was hopeful of a victory Tuesday.
“Hopefully, we don’t have to share a title,” he said. “It’s great.”
