With a 6-3 win on the road at Oak Ridge, the Granite Bay High boys tennis team earned a spot in Tuesday's section championship final. The Grizzlies did not win the high profiles matches at the top of the draw in the semifinal, but their depth pulled them through. Oak Ridge's Tanner Schmutte beat Brad Wong in the No. 1 singles duel and Brandon Sutter of Oak Ridge took care of Granite Bay's Kyle Pawlak in No. 2. The teams split the six singles matches, while Granite Bay swept the doubles action to put the finishing touches on the victory. Grizzly No. 3 Matt Veneman took care of Austin Hall in straight sets by a 6-4, 6-4 count, while Granite Bay's No. 4 singles player, Jake Keester was a winner in three sets over Andrew Hall, 2-6, 6-4, 6-0. Oak Ridge's Jimmy Giovannini, playing at No. 5 singles, was the only other winner for the Trojans as he ousted Blake Hunter, 6-3, 6-4. Kevin Carlson and Nick McDonald of Granite Bay took care of Nic Atkinson and Jonathan Kim 7-5, 6-4 in the top doubles match. Matt Kreiser and Matt Palkowski took the No. 2 doubles over Jake Hasse and Joe Carson of Oak Ridge, 3-6, 6-3, 6-0. The Grizzlies' Matt Thompson picked up a huge win in the No. 6 singles match, besting Alex Charn 7-6, 6-4. "Our doubles teams were extremely helpful today and each team played great to pull out a win at each spot," said Granite Bay coach Meghan Wolfgram. The Grizzlies are at Rio Americano at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday for the Division II section championship.
