Granite Bay starts fast at Division II track meet

Six finals were held at the Sac-Joaquin Section Divisions II and III track and field meet Wednesday at Bella Vista High School in Fair Oaks. Granite Bay won four.

Senior Kevin Nielsen won the high jump and long jump, and senior James Kinloch captured the discus throw to help the Grizzlies take an early lead in team points with 30. Fairfield-Vanden was second with 10 points heading into the rest of the finals Friday.

Nielsen high jumped 6 feet, 4 inches, two inches better than Center sophomore Xavier Howell. Woodcreek sophomore Johnny Biller was fourth at 6 feet. Nielsen won the long jump at 22-6½.

Kinloch won the discus with a throw of 175-5, more than 15 feet better than the runner-up. Oakmont senior Nelson Quinley was fourth at 150-9½. Kinloch won the Sierra Foothill League title by more than 37 feet last week.

Granite Bay senior Katie Zingheim, bound for Stanford on full scholarship, pole vaulted 12-11 to win her third consecutive Division II title. Roseville senior Ariel Maroon finished fourth at 10-11.

Seniors Karlaina Gipson (17-2) of Antelope and Hannah Hardy (16-11½) of Woodcreek finished second and third in the girls long jump. Bear River junior Kendal Nielsen won the event at 17-9.
