Granite Bay qualifies for section golf tourney
Granite Bay High School couldn’t catch Del Oro in the Sierra Foothill League golf race, but the Grizzlies qualified for Monday’s Sac-Joaquin Section Division II tournament at Haggin Oaks in Sacramento.
The Grizzlies finished third in SFL Tournament No. 2 on Monday at Timber Creek with a score of 404. Consistent Del Oro shot 383—for the third tournament in a row, Granite Bay coach Terry Stafford noted—and won the overall SFL championship.
While the Grizzlies’ score was higher “by an average of about four strokes a kid,” according to Stafford, Granite Bay still finished second in overall points to qualify for the section tournament.
Rocklin shot 404 Monday, second in the tournament and third overall in the final SFL standings.
The Capital Valley Conference also held its second tournament at Timber Creek, and Christian Brothers’ 380 score bettered Oakmont’s 416 for the title.
“Christian Brothers and Del Oro are shooting right about the same,” Stafford said. “We’re right behind them.”
Granite Bay went into the 2010 section tournament ranked fifth and then beat higher seeds Ponderosa and Woodcreek to finish third and qualify for the Masters tournament.
“We’re hoping to do the same thing,” Stafford said.
Austin Smotherman of Del Oro was the SFL tournament medalist with a 2-under-par 70. Granite Bay was led by Alex Gibbs with a 75 and Brandon Baumgarten with an 80.
Woodcreek totaled 435, one stroke lower than Roseville. Roseville’s scores were Logan Kerby at 82, Matsu Mori at 87, Nathan Haley and Cameron Naugle at 88, and Kyle Atteberry and C.J. Antekeier at 91.
Oakmont was led by Cory Eddings with a 76 and Zack Will with a 79.
