Granite Bay owns Antelope, Division 2 Pee Wee championship trophy

Woodcreek Midgets, Pee Wees ride shutouts into football playoffs

Granite Bay’s Pee Wee team erupted for three touchdowns in the second quarter and went on to wallop Antelope 38-7 in the Sierra Valley USA Youth Football & Cheer Division 2 championship game Saturday.

“I am very proud of the team,” coach John Nogrady said. “It was a great game and great season for the Granite Bay Junior Grizzlies.”

Tied 0-0 after one quarter, the host Junior Grizzlies (8-3) scored first on a 21-yard run by Tristan Lee behind the blocking of Lamont Mason and Gregory Gallegos. Granite Bay scored twice more in the second period on Andrew Martinez’s 75-yard catch and run and Sam Schroeder’s 20-yard reception.

The Grizzlies extended their lead to 30-0 after three quarters behind Vince Ellison, who had a 20-yard touchdown run and two interceptions.

Joey Washburn passed for 200 yards, including an 85-yarder to Matt Solone for Granite Bay’s final touchdown, and Chase Garmon made 4 of 5 point-after kicks.

Woodcreek 45, Whitney 0 — The Timberwolves (5-4) let 11 players carry the ball, and Woodcreek rolled up 260 yards rushing in their blowout of the Wildcats (0-9) in a regular-season finale.

Brock Thawley carried five times for 67 yards, including a 37-yard touchdown, and Ethan Astor ran three yards for a touchdown and passed nine yards to Peyton Allen for a score. Astor ran for 47 yards and passed for 30 yards. Matthew Fischer had a 36-yard touchdown run, Ryan Colliau a 15-yard score and Daniel Susac a five-yard touchdown.

On defense, James Sacco, Mack Vinsonhaler, Matthew Fischer and Matt Willford had five tackles each, and 15 Timberwolves had multiple tackles. Gabriel Romero blocked a punt for Woodcreek.

In other games, Woodcreek’s Junior Midgets lost to Whitney 32-0, the Junior Pee Wees fell 42-18, and the Mighty Mites lost 12-0.




Woodcreek 32, Whitney 0 — The Timberwolves (7-2) scored once in each quarter and converted all four two-point conversions in a rout of the Wildcats.

Stone Smartt threw three touchdown passes — 22 and 14 yards to Mason Whitney and a 52-yarder to Noah Kravich, who also scored Woodcreek’s final touchdown on a 20-yard interception return in the fourth quarter.

Marco Esquivel had two big runs for the Timberwolves on the first scoring drive.


Girls soccer


Power 3, Keiki Kickers 0 — Fatma Mohamed, Annika Gresko and Ashlyn Egan played well, but the Keiki Kickers sustained their first loss of the season in the 12U match.
