LOOMIS — It was down to the last two doubles matches when Del Oro High School’s tennis team erupted in cheers Thursday.

Alex Sznaider and Alexis Ezcurra finished off Brandt Misik and Allen Zheng 6-4, 6-0, and the Golden Eagles clinched a 5-4 victory over Granite Bay in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II championship match.

“Props to my guys. We played well,” Granite Bay coach Rory Wood said. “And props to Del Oro. They applied the pressure with a good support network behind them, which helps.”

A sizeable crowd surrounded Del Oro’s courts to witness the third meeting this season between the Sierra Foothill League rivals. Fans watched five matches go to three sets, four of which saw the winning singles player or doubles team come back after losing the first set.

Del Oro won the first meeting, and the Grizzlies won the second match, each ending 5-4 with the winning squad sweeping doubles play.

They split six singles matches Thursday, and the Golden Eagles won two of three in doubles to give the senior class its second section title in four years. Del Oro also won in 2009.

Granite Bay has played in the last six section finals and won two titles — in 2007 and last year.

“It was going to be a close match. It was good tennis,” Wood said. “Coming in second is kinda tough. We gotta win these things.”
