Granite Bay lands two on All-Section football team
Senior Beau Hershberger and sophomore Cameron Smith of Granite Bay High School were named to the All-Sac-Joaquin Section football team.
Hershberger, selected as a lineman, and Smith, chosen as a linebacker, were part of a defense that helped lift the Grizzlies (13-3) to the CIF Division I state championship.
Hershberger, who also was selected to play in the California All-Star Game last weekend in Visalia, had 90 tackles, five sacks and seven quarterback hurries. Smith led Granite Bay with 196 tackles and had four interceptions and 3½ sacks.
Named to the All-Section team on offense were Antelope seniors Tyler Winston and Daren Echeverria. Winston was listed as a receiver and Echeverria as a lineman. Winston had 57 catches for 876 yards and 13 touchdowns this season as the Titans (10-2) advanced to the Division II section quarterfinals.
Roseville 81, Woodland 31 — The Tigers (13-0) tuned up for the Atascadero Christmas Tournament by pummeling the Wolves.
“Our goal is always to try and put together 32 minutes, and we came close to doing that,” said Tigers coach Greg Granucci, whose team led 39-13 at halftime.
Daniel Rios led Roseville with 20 points, and Marcus Garcia scored 15.
Granite Bay third at Natomas — The Grizzlies (6-6) won two of three games to take third place in the Natomas Tournament.
Freshman Daeja Black totaled 57 points, including 25 in a 66-59 victory over Oakley-Freedom in the Grizzlies’ opener. Black also totaled 23 rebounds, 10 assists and six steals.
Senior Katrina Reeves had 20 points and nine assists against Freedom and totaled 21 assists and 19 rebounds in the tournament, and sophomore Annie Wright had 34 rebounds and 22 points. Junior Jennifer Manduca had four of her nine tournament steals in Granite Bay’s 54-38 victory over Natomas in the third-place game.
The First Tee names scholars — Granite Bay senior Brandon Baumgarten was named to The First Tee Scholar Class of 2013. Also receiving the honor were Hannah Gregg of Placer, Nathan Fuller of Union Mine and Sara Scarlett of Woodland.
