Granite Bay grad Loder falls in NCAA Division I wrestling quarterfinals

Granite Bay High School graduate Ryan Loder won his first two matches at the NCAA Division I Championships before losing in the quarterfinals Friday in Des Moines, Iowa.

The University of Northern Iowa junior defeated Cody Reed of Binghamton 4-0 and 11th-ranked Mike Larson of Missouri 2-0 before losing to No. 3 Robert Hamlin of Lehigh 2-1 in the round of eight at 184 pounds.

Loder (32-5), ranked sixth, needs to win his next match to qualify for the medal rounds and All-America status. He can wrestle back and place as high as third.


Softball: Woodcreek falls to Rocklin in nine


Host Woodcreek (8-2 overall, 3-1 Sierra Foothill League) allowed three unearned runs in the top of the ninth inning and lost to unbeaten Rocklin 3-0 on Thursday at Mahany Park. Amanda Horbasch pitched a three-hitter, walked one and struck out three for the Timberwolves. Woodcreek was limited to two hits.


Baseball: Valley Christian competes at Pioneer but is done in by errors


Trailing 2-1 after three innings, the Lions (6-5) gave up four runs in the fourth and five in the sixth in the nonleague loss to the Patriots (4-2). Valley Christian committed six errors.

Valley Christian junior Jeremiah Moore allowed eight hits, five of which were infield hits, in five innings. The Lions had runners in scoring position in four of six innings against 6-foot-4, 240-pound Pioneer pitcher Thomas Galart. Cameron Woodside went 2 for 2 for Valley Christian.

“Even though the score does not reflect it, we competed much better,” Lions coach Brad Gunter Jr. said.
