Granite Bay grad Loder earns two wrestling awards
Granite Bay High School graduate Ryan Loder, a redshirt freshman at Northern Iowa University, recently was named Freshman of the Year in the Western Wrestling Conference in voting by the league’s coaches.
He received the same honor from D1CollegeWrestling.net.
Loder, wrestling at 184 pounds, won the NCAA Western Regional and earned a berth in the Division I Championships in Philadelphia as the No. 6 seed. Unranked at the start of the season, Loder went to Philadelphia ranked fifth and riding a 12-match winning streak. He also won 15 of 16 matches and 21 of 24 at one point.
Loder was named WWC Wrestler of the Week three times and recorded six pins, three technical falls and six major decisions. All 11 of his losses were by decision.
Loder had several victories over ranked wrestlers, including Chris Perry of Oklahoma State, Josh Ihnen of Nebraska, Dan Rinaldi of Rutgers, Mike Larson of Missouri, Grant Gambrall of Iowa and Cody Magrum of Ohio State. Loder defeated three-time All-American Joe LeBlanc of Wyoming 4-3 in the regional final.
Loder’s 30 victories led Northern Iowa. He was eliminated at the Division I Championships just before the All-America rounds, by fourth-seeded Travis Rutt of Wisconsin 4-2.
