FOLSOM – Granite Bay and Woodcreek high schools ran away with the headlines at the Sac-Joaquin Section cross country meet Saturday at Willow Hill.
The Granite Bay girls won the Division I team championship with 45 points. Freshman Clare Carroll and senior Brooke Holt repeated their 1-2 finish from a week ago at the sub-section meet with Carroll clocking a winning time of 17 minutes, 55 seconds over the three-mile course.
“All that hard work we did during the season has paid off,” Carroll said, adding that the Grizzlies worked together. “It was just a really fun race. I was just trying to do my best and push the pace. ... It was this really good feeling when we crossed the finish line.”
The Grizzlies also took the 11th, 15th, 22nd and 28th spots.
“It’s a great relief to finish in first,” Granite Bay coach Angie Pozzi said. “These girls have come down a long road, and they worked their butts off. They worked really, really hard. They worked together as a team, they worked all summer, and they worked all fall. And they fined-tuned it here and finished strong.”
Woodcreek placed second in the Division II boys race with 69 points. Brandon Biando and Jon Horvath were the lead runners, finishing sixth and seventh individually.
Rocklin finished eighth with 193 points. Cody Fikes was their best man with a 31st-place finish. Trevor Stephens of Del Oro placed 35th and helped the Golden Eagles finish ninth with a score of 233. Oakmont was 10th with 345 points, led by Luis Mora finishing 17th.
Sophomore Trent Brendel was the lone Granite Bay runner in the Division I race and finished second with a time of 16:05.
“It was actually better than what I expected,” Brendel said. “I expected the other half of the section to just come in and kick me out of there, but I just ran my race.”
Del Oro took first place over Woodcreek in the Division II girls race in a tiebreaker. Each had 59 points. The tie was broken by the best overall time, and Del Oro was one second better. Del Oro senior Caitlin Devitt Payne was the individual champ in a time of 19:02.
Karina Nunes placed fourth to lead Woodcreek.
Rocklin finished seventh with 168 points, and Oakmont finished ninth with 204.
All Woodcreek and Granite Bay runners advanced to the state meet. Brendel advanced as an individual. Del Oro’s girls also advanced.
