Granite Bay extends streak with 16th swimming league title
Add another year to Granite Bay High School’s streak of swimming league championships.
The Grizzlies made it 16 in a row last weekend by winning the Sierra Foothill League finals at the Roseville Aquatics Complex, and they broke several records in the process.
Andrew Murch broke three records. He swam the 100 backstroke in 51.41 seconds to break the SFL record held by Zack Humphreys since 2009. Murch also broke the 100 freestyle mark with a 46.3 time. He swam with Malique Elder, Will Lewis and Kevin Wylder to a time of 1:26.23 in the 200 free relay, breaking Del Oro’s record.
On the girls side, Hannah Calton broke the SFL record in the 100 butterfly at 56.17, and she combined with Lauren Fitzgerald, Julienne Tadena and Summer Spradley to break the league record in the 200 medley relay at 1:48.04.
While Sophie Weber didn’t break a record, she swam a season-best 4:54.25 in the 500 freestyle, falling short of Stephanie Cota’s 10-year-old record by four-hundredths of a second.
Other winners for Granite Bay were Fitzgerald in the 200 individual medley; Alexis Martinez, Spradley, Weber and Ashley Taylor in the 200 free relay; Weber, Fitzgerald, Calton and Jordan Anderson in the 400 free relay; and Murch, Hunter Christian, Wylder and Max Vigeant in the 200 medley relay.
The Grizzlies qualified 44 swimmers for the Sac-Joaquin Section championships from May 10-12 at Tokay High School in Lodi.
