Granite Bay is eighth at NorCal golf tourney

Granite Bay High School’s golf team finished eighth in the CIF Northern California Championship on Monday at Butte Creek Country Club in Chico.

The Grizzlies had a team score of 30-over-par 390. Sierra Foothill League rival Del Oro was ninth at 37-over 397. Del Oro won the SFL title, and Granite Bay rebounded the next week to win the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II championship. Del Oro won the section Masters Tournament on May 16, and Granite Bay finished third to qualify for the NorCal tournament.

Concord-De La Salle won the NorCal championship with a 9-over 369 score. Robert Louis Stevenson of Pebble Beach and Pleasanton-Foothill tied for second at 10-over 370. All three teams qualified for the State Championships on June 8 at Poppy Hills Golf Course in Pebble Beach.

Austin Smotherman of Del Oro was one of six individuals to qualify for the state tournament. He shot an even-par 72 that included three birdies.

Alex Gibbs led Granite Bay with a 2-over 74, including two birdies. His 74 put him in an 11-way tie for 15th place individually. Brandon Baumgarten and Bryan Wise each shot 6-over 78, Chuck Pedone a 79, Connor Hallisey an 81 and Zach Witt a 93.
