Cavitt Middle School eighth-grader Clare Carroll of Granite Bay was the surprising third-place finisher in San Mateo last weekend. Carroll ran with about 20 competitors in the 1,500-meter run at USA Track & Field’s Pacific Association Championships Memorial Day weekend at the College of San Mateo. Despite being significantly younger than most of the other runners, Carroll enjoyed significant success. Shaluinn Fullove of Impala Racing Track Club won the event in a time of 4:34.68 with her teammate Brooke Wells capturing second place. That duo both qualified in 2008 for the U.S. Olympic Trials. With a time of 4:40.68, the 13-year-old Carroll came in third place, with Sacramento State University runner Jodie Leal five seconds behind her. It was another impressive result for a young runner that is rapidly making a name for herself in the running world.
