After losing the section final to Oak Ridge one year ago, the Granite Bay boys tennis team exacted a measure of revenge Tuesday as the Grizzlies aced out a 5-4 win in the first round of this year’s event. Oak Ridge did well in the higher-seeded contests, but was taken down by the depth of Granite Bay as the Grizzlies lost the No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles matches, but did very well down the card. Senior Drew Forlini took care of business in the No. 2 singles and fellow team captain Paul Bonnie won the No. 5 match. Veteran Matt Veneman also won his duel at No. 6 singles, while the Grizzly freshman trio was not as successful. Max Vogt lost a close two-set match at No. 1 singles and No. 4 Jake Keester fell short in three sets. Kyle Pawlak did represent the freshman crew well, taking a 7-6 third set to win the No. 3 singles match. Oak Ridge took No. 2 doubles in addition to the top match, but Granite Bay’s No. 3 pair, Matt Palkowski and Kevin Carlson, locked down their contest to secure the team win. The Grizzlies move on to the quarterfinals today with a trip to Woodland and a date with Pioneer. Full results: Singles 1. Schmutte O def. Vogt GB 6-4,7-6 2. Forlini GB def. Hall O 7-6-6-2 3.
