Granite Bay earns first bid to state golf tournament
Granite Bay High School’s golf team is headed to the state tournament.
The Grizzlies earned the third and final team berth on the final two holes and shot a team score of 373 at the NCGA/CIF Tournament on Monday at Butte Creek Country Club in Chico.
Coach Terry Stafford said Granite Bay knew where it stood late in the tournament. Alex Gibbs, playing in the final foursome, had to come in at even-par 72 for the Grizzlies to earn their first bid to the state tournament.
Gibbs even gave Granite Bay a little breathing room with birdies on Nos. 17 and 18 to shoot a 2-under 70. Sierra Foothill League rival Del Oro finished fourth with a 376.
“My heart is out of my socks now. Oh my gosh,” Stafford said. “It’s so hard to make it to state and we’ve never been there, so this is so exciting.”
Stafford said with powerhouses like Concord-De La Salle and Pebble Beach-Robert Louis Stevenson always in the mix, “It’s a huge, huge accomplishment for these boys.”
Pleasanton-Foothill won the team title at 5-over 365, one stroke better than Stevenson’s 366. The state tournament is scheduled for June 6 at San Gabriel Country Club in Southern California.
Junior Brandon Baumgarten shot what Stafford described as a “really strong” 72.
“He got up and down from some really tough spots to par a lot of holes,” Stafford said. “Talk about somebody grinding out some pars.”
Jeff Inouye-Wong fired a 74, Bryan Wise a 77, Chuck Pedone an 80 and Zack Kwan an 82 for Granite Bay.
Stafford said the Grizzlies will travel to Southern California on June 5, shoot a practice round “and then give it a shot,” adding “how proud I am of these boys for how well they play together and for each other all season long.”
