Granite Bay beats McClatchy in deciding game
Granite Bay baseball is headed back to the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II championship game.
Following a 4-3 loss Saturday, McClatchy proved formidable back at American River College on Tuesday, beating Granite Bay 7-5 in game two and forcing a deciding game in their semifinal series. The Grizzlies staved off another six-run inning by the Lions (21-10) and won 12-7.
The final is scheduled for 6 p.m. Monday at Sacramento City College. Granite Bay awaits the winner of the Woodcreek-Rocklin series, which resumes at 4 p.m. Wednesday with Rocklin leading 1-0.
Granite Bay senior Brendan Keeney allowed one run and one with five strikeouts through four innings in the “if” game. A five-run, five-hit fifth knocked him out.
It was then left to Gabe Meza, who gassed six strikeouts against the final 11 hitters to preserve Keeney’s win.
“I went in there confident in knowing how to close the door,” Meza said. “It’s going to be a battle in the championship. Hopefully, it’s against Rocklin, because we’ve got a bit of a rivalry going.”
Rocklin defeated Granite Bay in the 2007, 2009 and 2010 section finals and has been to four of the last five title games.
Sophomore Devin Lehman, who hit a three-run homer and totaled four RBI in the deciding game, said he expects to win no matter who the Grizzlies face.
“Coach Espo preaches coming out and doing your job,” Lehman said, referring to head coach Pat Esposito. “It doesn’t matter who, but I’d rather it be Rocklin.”
Esposito has ample time to prepare.
“If we did play Rocklin and beat them it would be a little payback for the 2010 team, but we’re not going to worry about who we play,” Esposito said.
“Sometimes, guys get nervous when you worry about the other team, so we’re just going to go out there loose, play whoever and hope it works out for us.”
