Granite Bay’s Nelson earns college volleyball award

Granite Bay High School graduate Lindsey Nelson was named Hitter of the Week in the Heart of America Athletic Conference.

Nelson, a freshman outside hitter, helped Peru State of Nebraska sweep three matches. She averaged 3.7 kills per set with a hitting percentage of .320, according to a Peru State news release. In a sweep of Avila, Nelson had 14 kills and two blocks.

Nelson has 171 kills this season and averages 2.06 per set. She also has 27 digs, 23 block assists and six solo blocks.

Lord’s Gym fighter loses by decision

Mario Monarrez, fighting at 158 pounds out of Lord’s Gym/Bam Bam Boxing in Roseville, was outpointed by David Lopez (16-0, 14 knockouts) of San Francisco’s World Class Boxing Gym on a program at Caballero’s Boxing Club in Sacramento last weekend.

Monarrez’s amateur record fell to 15-13.

Lions Club charity golf in Lincoln

The Lincoln Hills Lions Club will hold its annual charity golf classic at 9 a.m. Monday, Oct. 22, at Lincoln Hills Golf Club.

Prizes will go to the top three foursomes, top two closest to the pin, longest drive and straightest drive. There will be an international buffet luncheon, goodie bags and more.

Fees are $95 for an individual and $370 for a foursome. Proceeds benefit local schools, Ride to Walk, Guide Dogs for the Blind, Lincoln PAL, Special Olympics and the Lions Education Foundation.
