Granite Bay’s Brendel captures cross country subsection title in Division II

Woodcreek varsity boys second, girls third in Division I

Trent Brendel came up short at the 2011 Sac-Joaquin Subsection Meet. He came out on top Saturday.

The Granite Bay High School senior improved on his runner-up finish in 2011 by completing the Frogtown course in 15 minutes, 45 seconds to win the Division II varsity boys race in Angels Camp. Roseville sophomore Neilson Powless was second in the field of 183 in 15:53.

Del Campo won the team crown with 99 points. Granite Bay finished sixth and Roseville eighth. Sophomores Paul Zeiss of Granite Bay and Arturo Sotomayor of Roseville were 14th and 15th in 16:32 and 16:37.

In Division I, Woodcreek’s varsity boys totaled 96 points to place second to Stockton- Lincoln’s 65. Woodcreek senior Jon Horvath finished fifth out of 125 in 16:29, followed by Timberwolves senior Justin Clark in 12th (16:57), junior Marshall Sears in 14th (17:11), sophomore Spencer Lachman in 18th (17:20) and sophomore Luis Romo in 47th (18:11).

Karina Nunes’ runner-up effort in the Division I varsity girls race helped Woodcreek to a team finish of third behind Oak Ridge and St. Francis. Nunes was timed in 19:20, 19 seconds behind Pleasant Grove’s Alex Balph.

Also for Woodcreek, freshman Lauren Mason was 11th (20:06), sophomore Devyn Everts 26th (20:32), junior Rosemary Dipentino 44th (21:18) and freshman Teresa Zortman 49th (21:44).

In other races:

* Granite Bay freshman Maggie Bell placed 14th at 20:19 and junior Katie Mersereau 16th at 20:20 in the Division II varsity girls race.

* Oakmont junior Marisa Carino ran a 19:36 to come in fourth out of 153 runners in the Division III varsity girls event.

* Oakmont’s Logan Taggert and Tanner Moore finished 1-2 in the Division III freshman boys race at 11:37 and 11:43, and the Vikings were second to Del Oro in the team race.

* Oakmont’s Ian Miller (11:27) won the Division III sophomore run, and Christian Woolfolk was second at 11:42 to help the Vikings place second to El Dorado.
