Young singers from a Roseville school brought some glee to the residents of a local senior living community Dec. 1 with a special holiday-themed performance.

About 35 of the 77 kids in the Vencil Brown Elementary School Glee Club sang a handful of Christmas songs to the delight of about 25 seniors living at the Mistywood complex.

“They have a bucket load of songs they’ve been memorizing. It’s a lot of work,” teacher Melinda Hawkes told the audience.

The students — in first through fifth grade — had practiced twice a week since September and were first cast into the spotlight for a performance during the city of Roseville’s tree lighting ceremony downtown on Nov. 19.

They opened the Mistywood show with “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” and finished with “We Wish You a Merry Christmas.” Like true professionals, they kept on going even when they forgot the lyrics. The kids also sang a spirited rendition of “The Chipmunk Song.”

“But they sound a lot better than chipmunks,” Hawkes said proudly.
