Woodcreek High School freshman honored by Roseville mayor for her accomplishment

Jamie Reich attended Roseville’s Celebrate the Earth festival with no idea of what awaited her later that afternoon. The Woodcreek High School freshman was in for a pleasant surprise: During the April 17 event, Mayor Gina Garbolino awarded Reich with a City of Roseville Resolution of Commendation and Congratulations. “I was so impressed with the people who got awards ahead of me,” Reich said. “I thought it would be so great to someday get one too. Then when she said my name, I had to think to myself … ‘did she just say my name’?” Garbolino honored Reich with the award to recognize the project she developed to teach younger Girl Scouts about environmental responsibility. Reich collaborated with Roseville’s Utility Exploration Center on the project, and earned her Silver Award as a result. The Silver Award is the second-highest award a Girl Scout can earn. For her project, Reich, a senior Girl Scout in Troop 788, first researched different types of merit badges, called “Try Its.” None of the badges fit her purpose, so she decided to meet with exploration center staff and create her own merit badge. The result: Go Green with Uki — the center’s mascot — Brownie Try It. This project gives Brownies an opportunity to explore the center, learn about the garbage pile exhibit and create their own greenhouse. Reich’s troop hosted an event at the center in February to introduce more than 100 Brownies to the new Try It. When Garbolino heard about Reich’s efforts to promote environmentalism in younger children, she decided to honor this innovative student. Also as part of her Silver Award, Reich collected used clothing, toiletries, school supplies and cleaning supplies for PEACE for Families, an organization that fights domestic violence and sexual abuse. She ensured that any unwanted items received a new home and weren’t disposed of in a less-environmentally friendly way. Reich will officially receive her Silver Award during a May 16 Girl Scout ceremony in Sacramento. ~ Sena Christian
