Former Roseville police officer goes from cleaning streets to carpets

Kevin Manzer traded in his badge for a vacuum cleaner. Manzer started Always Green Clean in June 2010, after spending five years with the Roseville Police Department where he was a member of the SWAT team and Crime Suppression Unit. He said his decision to leave law enforcement and start up a cleaning business was based on his long-term goals. “In law enforcement, you get promoted to sergeant and you’re back on graveyards,” Manzer said. “You work hard to get the shifts that you want, and then you’re going back to working weekend nights.” Working odd hours eventually took its toll on Manzer, 34, who said while he wouldn’t trade his experience as a police officer for anything, he just wasn’t sure if it was the career for him. “You definitely have to have a certain passion to truly enjoy law enforcement for your entire life,” he said. “For me it was a great life experience.” Manzer balances running his business and spending time with his girlfriend and her 8-year-old daughter, whom he often supports at her sporting events. He said he chose the cleaning industry because he feels he understands what people expect and should receive when dealing with residential services. “I never grew up thinking about having a cleaning service,” Manzer said. “What it is about is actually running and growing your company, whatever the industry is.” Always Green Clean uses nontoxic, biodegradable products for cleaning carpet, tile grout, hardwood floors and upholstery. The company also deals with commercial janitorial services and last month added general house cleaning to its list of services. What started out as a business with just Manzer and one cleaning van has evolved, in less than two years, to three vans with six full-time employees. Last year, Always Green Clean completed more than 2,100 jobs, said Manzer, a Roseville resident who now spends most of his time in his Gold River office handling client calls and coordinating cleaning crews. “It has been a pretty significant growth,” Manzer said. “The reason is when a customer finds a good service, people want to share that experience and tell other people.” Manzer first promoted his business by paying for radio ads and TV commercials. The business today is largely promoted by word of mouth and social media, such as Twitter and Facebook. “You have to have that to run a successful business,” he said. He said he felt the cleaning industry could use a little professionalism, which he brings by conducting background checks on all employees, providing new technology and equipment and ensuring employees represent the company in a professional manner. That professionalism is exactly why client Sean Verran is a satisfied customer. “I’ve used lots of other companies, and he is by far better than anyone else,” Verran said. “And on top of that, he’s a great guy so I don’t mind giving him my business.” Verran oversees about 95 rental car offices from Bakersfield to Redding for Roseville-based Enterprise Holdings. He hired Always Green Clean to service about 26 local offices one year ago. “He’s extremely professional, and very thorough,” Verran said. “Especially for that industry, he’s heads and shoulders above anybody else I’ve used as far as professionalism and ease of dealing with.” Manzer said that when it comes to cleaning services, you typically get what you pay for. “We’re not the cheapest in town,” he said. “But our pricing is very fair and surprises a lot of people.” Pricing is one of the reasons why Verran chose to hire Manzer’s company. “I bid out the prices using a lot of different companies,” Verran said. “He came in lowest.” Toby Lewis can be reached at email@example.com.
