A Rancho Cordova man is dead after an early morning solo car accident Sunday on Auburn Folsom Road.

According to Dave Martinez, California Highway Patrol spokesman, Matthew Bohling, 29, died in the 1:57 a.m. accident on April 7. He was driving a Blue Honda Civic northbound on Auburn Folsom Road approaching Eagle View Lane, at an unknown rate of speed. Martinez said for reasons still under investigation, Bohling lost control of his vehicle and traveled across the southbound lanes and off the roadway.

He said after leaving the roadway, the Honda struck two concrete poles, a fire hydrant and a tree. Bohling sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by South Placer Fire personnel.

South Placer Fire District Battalion Chief Darren McMillin said South Placer Fire crews were originally dispatched to check or secure a leaky fire hydrant at the intersection of Eagle View Lane and Auburn Folsom Road.  McMillin said upon arrival crews discovered that a vehicle was responsible for the damage to the hydrant that was sheared off.

He said after the vehicle sheared off the fire hydrant it ended up hitting a tree where the driver was pinned. He said there were no signs of life in the victim when the crews arrived. He said South Placer Fire crews extricated the driver from the vehicle and he was transferred to the coroner unit.  He said the time of the call was 1:59 a.m., April 7.

Martinez said it is unknown if the driver was under the influence of alcohol or drugs. He said that will be determined later through a toxicology report from the Placer County Coroner’s Office.
