Moseby HR caps five-run first inning
Before the spectators were even settled into their seats Tuesday afternoon, the Granite Bay High baseball team opened a five-run lead on its way to an 11-5 win over Roseville on the Tigers’ home field. The Grizzlies jumped on the Roseville starter, senior Michael Luzinski, right at the outset. Leadoff man Teddy Bryant drew a walk to open the contest and the following a Sam Flajole single, senior shortstop Travis Israel banged a two-bagger to chase home both runs. After a popout, Granite Bay designated hitter Sean Sundberg singled and then first baseman Lydell Moseby sent a souvenir into the backyard of a home behind the left-field fence with a long three-run blast. Not content to sit back and take it, Roseville responded quickly to the initial Granite Bay burst, as the Tigers tallied three times in their half of the first. Sophomore shortstop Nick Blaser and senior second baseman Andrew Beals hit the first two pitches thrown by right-hander Braden Young for back-to-back table-setting singles. As Blaser attempted to steal third base, the throw from Granite Bay catcher Andrew Knapp beat the runner, but Flajole was unable to hold it, and Blaser raced in with Roseville’s first run. A base hit by Tiger designated hitter Anthony Roberts plated Roseville’s second run, and then a pair of fielder’s choices scored a third before a ground ball ended a wild offensive opening stanza with the Grizzlies leading 5-3. Granite Bay took advantage of a throwing error and four singles to score two more run in the top of the second and used two more errors and two hits to increase the advantage to 10-3 after three innings. The Tigers scored single runs in the fourth and fifth innings, sandwiched around a Granite Bay tally in the top of the fifth, but the damage was done early as the Grizzlies maintained the comfortable margin through the end of the contest. Flajole led the Grizzlies with three hits, as Sundberg and Knapp each added a pair of knocks. Beals and Roberts had two hits a piece for the Tigers. Roseville (0-2 in the SFL, 2-5 overall) is at Rocklin (2-1, 3-4) Thursday, while Granite Bay (3-0, 7-0) visits Oakmont (1-1, 4-1).
